Pope Leo Visits Great Mosque of Algiers, Promotes Peace

Pope Leo visited the Great Mosque of Algiers as part of an 11-day tour of Africa, which included stops in Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea from April 13 to 23. Upon entering the mosque, he removed his shoes, a gesture of respect.

During his visit, he paused for silent meditation and was welcomed by the mosque's rector, Moham Mamoun Al Qasim, who expressed gratitude for the Pope's presence. The Pope highlighted the spiritual significance of the site and the importance of mutual respect and coexistence between Christians and Muslims.

He noted the dual religious and intellectual vocation of the mosque complex and its role in promoting human dignity and peace. The Great Mosque of Algiers is the third largest mosque in the world, accommodating 120,000 worshippers, with a minaret height of 267 meters.

The Pope's visit aims to strengthen bonds between Christian and Muslim communities and promote a climate of peace and tolerance.
