WAPP to Launch Second Phase of Electricity Market

The West African Power Pool (WAPP) is set to launch the second phase of its regional electricity market early next year, as part of efforts to enhance cross-border electricity trading and improve power supply in the sub-region. Abdoulaye Dia, the Secretary-General of WAPP, made this announcement during the 68th meeting of the WAPP Executive Board in Lomé, Togo.
He highlighted ongoing implementations of guidelines for institutional strengthening and the operationalisation of the independent system and market operator. This includes functional and accounting unbundling, ensuring operational continuity through the WAPP Information and Coordination Centre.
Sule Abdulaziz, the Chairman of the WAPP Executive Board, emphasized the necessity of sound legal, institutional, and financial frameworks to protect the interests of WAPP and its members. He also reiterated the importance of network synchronisation and urged member utilities to meet their financial obligations, stating that statutory contributions are vital for WAPP's autonomy and operational capacity.
