Dangote's Refinery Saves Nigeria $10 Billion in Subsidy Losses

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, revealed in an interview with Al Jazeera that his refinery has disrupted the Nigerian fuel subsidy system, preventing an estimated $10 billion in annual losses. He explained that fuel subsidy payments had become a significant issue for the Nigerian government until the launch of his 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery.

Dangote noted that the refinery's success involved battling against entrenched cartels within Nigeria's oil sector. He stated, “Turning back was not an option, they were looting $10 billion every year because it was a subsidy.” Despite the refinery's achievements, he acknowledged that challenges remain, as some cartels continue to resist.

He remarked on the initial chaos caused by the subsidy system, where the government was burdened with payments while the cartels profited.
