Sowore Condemns Tinubu's Electoral Act 2026 Amendment

Omoyele Sowore, a former presidential candidate and activist, condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's signing of the Electoral Act 2026 amendment during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. Sowore characterized the new law as a threat to democracy in Nigeria, asserting that it is designed to undermine the integrity of elections by forbidding free, fair, and credible electoral processes.

He called on Nigerian opposition legislators to resist this assault on democracy and urged the populace to confront the prevailing political impunity in the country. The signing of the law, which governs the conduct of elections in Nigeria, comes ahead of the 2027 general elections scheduled for February 20 for presidential polls and March 6 for governorship and state house assembly elections.

Sowore's remarks reflect a growing concern among opposition figures and civil society organizations regarding the transparency and fairness of the electoral process under the new law.
