Sokoto Government Enhances Maternal Health Care Initiatives

The Sokoto State government, represented by Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar Wurno, has pledged to work with relevant partners in the health sector to address significant gaps in maternal and child healthcare delivery.

During a stakeholder engagement workshop aimed at enhancing leadership and management capacity in the health sector, Wurno acknowledged the challenges posed by high maternal mortality rates in the state. The government is actively implementing the Sarah Project to mitigate these issues.

Plans include recruiting 640 midwives for hospitals and 2,400 community health extension workers across 23 local government areas. The state government is also focused on securing adequate funding for health facilities and maintaining infrastructure.

The workshop, supported by UNICEF and DGI, aims to bolster the state's healthcare management capacity, with an expectation that the government will provide necessary support to achieve the project's five goals.
