Research Reveals Need for Coordinated Support Systems

Azibaolanari Okungbowa describes the exhausting journey of a parent attending numerous meetings with different professionals, such as teachers, social workers, and therapists, each lacking communication with one another. This fragmentation forces parents to carry their child's entire story across various agencies.

Okungbowa's research involved 50 families and professionals in Scotland, with over 85 contributions from interviews and focus groups, alongside 50 anonymous survey responses. The findings indicate that 97% of parent and carer respondents reported difficulties navigating support systems, and 87% frequently had to repeat the same information to multiple professionals.

The proposed Coherence Navigation Framework suggests three structural changes: appointing a named person with coordination authority recognized by all agencies, ensuring transparency in the pathway for families, and maintaining continuity despite staff changes or funding shifts. This approach aims to alleviate the burden on families and improve their overall experience in the system.
