WHO and Africa CDC Launch $518M Ebola Response Plan

The World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa CDC unveiled a US$518 million continental Ebola response plan, designed as a comprehensive six-month blueprint to enhance the capacity of African nations to swiftly detect, prepare for, and contain the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. This initiative is crucial during the critical window from June to November 2026.

The plan emphasizes a collaborative approach, complementing national response strategies already in place in affected countries, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. The current outbreak presents unique clinical challenges, as the Bundibugyo virus is the primary culprit.

The plan identifies 10 priority countries, including DRC, Uganda, South Sudan, Burundi, and Rwanda, with additional focus on Angola, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Kenya, Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Yemen. Nigeria is assessed as low risk but is advised to maintain vigilance.

The funding aims to reinforce public health infrastructure and support logistics, with an initial release of US$2.6 million for emergency operations.
