WHO Chief Tedros Arrives in DRC Amid Ebola Outbreak

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), arrived in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on Thursday to support efforts against the ongoing Ebola outbreak, which has been declared since May 15. This outbreak has resulted in 246 deaths among 1,077 suspected cases.

The outbreak is centered in the Ituri province, which is experiencing significant insecurity due to the presence of armed groups, including the Islamic State-affiliated ADF militia. The DRC, home to 100 million people, has faced three decades of conflict, complicating health responses.

The Africa CDC has warned that the outbreak could spread further, especially in displacement camps where hygiene conditions are poor. Tedros emphasized the need for support and assured the Congolese people that they are not alone in this fight.

Vaccines against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola are expected to be ready by the end of the year, with clinical trials recommended by an advisory group.
