WHO: Heart Disease, Stroke Kill Millions Annually as NCDs Dominate

The World Health Organization has released new data showing that heart disease and stroke remain the deadliest conditions globally, together claiming more than 16 million lives in 2023. Ischaemic heart disease—a condition where arteries narrow or block, reducing blood flow to the heart—killed approximately 9.5 million people that year, representing roughly 16 percent of all deaths worldwide.
Stroke ranked as the second leading killer, underscoring the continued threat posed by cardiovascular conditions. Noncommunicable diseases as a category dominated mortality statistics in 2023, responsible for nearly three-quarters of all deaths.
This category encompasses conditions such as heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, and dementia. The WHO's latest Global Health Estimates, released in October 2026, tracked mortality patterns and disease trends across more than 160 conditions and injuries from 2000 through 2023, covering nations and regions worldwide.
The data carries particular significance for Nigeria, where healthcare infrastructure remains strained and access to preventive care and chronic disease management remains limited in many communities. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory conditions increasingly burden Nigerian hospitals and health systems, yet public awareness campaigns about risk factors remain inconsistent.
Global life expectancy reached 73.3 years in 2023, nearly recovering to pre-pandemic levels after declining during COVID-19. The WHO's broader findings reveal that while infectious disease mortality has declined over recent decades, deaths from preventable noncommunicable conditions continue rising, driven by aging populations, lifestyle factors, and limited access to early detection and treatment in many regions.
