WHO Rejects Ervebo Vaccine Rollout for Ebola Strain

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declined to endorse the programmatic rollout of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, which is responsible for the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This decision was made due to insufficient evidence regarding the vaccine's ability to provide meaningful protection against the virus.

The WHO's updated emergency guidance, published on its official website, follows a review by the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) on August 19. The Bundibugyo strain has caused 2,911 deaths and affected over 6,000 individuals, with no approved vaccine currently available.

Although animal studies suggest some potential protection, human studies have not demonstrated sufficient efficacy against Bundibugyo. The WHO emphasized the need for a well-designed ring randomized controlled trial to reliably assess the vaccine's effectiveness and urged for its swift implementation while maintaining scientific integrity.
