WHO Declares High Regional Ebola Risk in DRC

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Wednesday that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) poses a high risk at the national and regional levels but remains low globally. WHO's chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, indicated that the outbreak likely began a couple of months ago, with 51 confirmed cases reported in the eastern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.

Additionally, Uganda has reported two confirmed cases, including one death. The situation has raised serious concerns about potential further spread, with almost 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths.

Tedros declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern, the second highest level of alarm, which triggers a response under the International Health Regulations (IHR). The emergency committee convened on Tuesday and concluded that the current situation does not meet the criteria for a pandemic.

Lucila Blumberg, chair of the committee, stated that investigations are ongoing to trace the transmission chain of the virus.
