WHO Seeks $1 Billion for Global Health Crises in 2026

The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested $1 billion to tackle the world's worst health crises in 2026, focusing on 36 severe emergencies globally, such as Gaza, Sudan, Haiti, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. WHO estimates that 239 million people urgently need humanitarian assistance this year.

Chikwe Ihekweazu, the health emergency chief, emphasized the critical need to keep essential health services operational to address various health challenges, including injuries, diseases, malnutrition, and chronic conditions. The appeal comes amidst funding cuts and constraints, with the UN facing challenges due to reduced aid from major donors like the United States.

Last year, global fund cuts resulted in the closure or reduction of services in 6,700 health facilities across 22 humanitarian settings, affecting millions of people. The call for increased funding aims to prevent further health crises and save lives in vulnerable populations.
