Australia Proposes User Control Over Social Media Feeds

The Australian Government has proposed new legislation titled “My Feed, My Way,” which would allow social media users aged 16 and over to disable algorithm-driven feeds and view posts only from accounts they follow. This proposal aims to give users more control over their online content and requires platforms to inform users about their choices, with penalties of up to A$109.2 million for non-compliance.

This initiative represents a shift in the debate over online content control, moving away from government regulation towards user empowerment. In contrast, the European Union has implemented the Digital Services Act, which mandates large online platforms to manage illegal content and enhance transparency, thereby holding them accountable while protecting users' rights.

However, both approaches raise concerns about censorship and the balance of power between governments and private companies in regulating online content.
