WHO Calls for 5,000 Health Workers to Combat Ebola in DRC

The World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated that the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak necessitates approximately 5,000 trained health workers to effectively manage the virus's spread. The outbreak, which originated in Bunia, has now affected six provinces.

WHO officials reported that nearly 1,400 treatment beds have been established across 59 centers, but an additional 1,600 beds are still required. Luca Fontana, a WHO technical officer, noted that about three health workers are needed for each Ebola treatment bed, leading to a total requirement of around 9,000 staff for the planned capacity of 3,000 beds.

The WHO is urging donors to expedite funding for Congo's government-led response plan, which seeks $1.3 billion over the next six months. The current outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, which lacks an approved vaccine.

The response strategy is shifting towards decentralized treatment centers to better reach affected communities.
