PeacePro Calls for 50% Voter Turnout in 2027 Elections

The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) has called for a minimum of 50 percent voter turnout in the upcoming 2027 general elections in Nigeria. This appeal comes in light of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reporting that there are currently 103,428,715 registered voters.
Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the executive director of PeacePro, emphasized that achieving a 50 percent turnout would require over 51.7 million Nigerians to vote. He expressed concern over the declining voter participation rates in presidential elections, which have dropped from 53.7 percent in 2011 to just 26.7 percent in 2023.
Hamzat stated that a turnout below 50 percent would undermine the democratic credibility of the elections and urged all stakeholders, including INEC, political parties, civil society organizations, and the media, to tackle issues contributing to voter apathy, such as distrust in political institutions, insecurity, and logistical barriers.
