Lagos Land Reclamation: Challenges for Housing Solutions

Experts indicate that while Lagos' land reclamation can create additional development space, it does not guarantee affordable housing or well-serviced communities. The costs associated with land reclamation, including infrastructure and environmental management, influence the type of development that occurs.

Town planner Niyi Aderohunmu emphasized that reclamation should be part of a comprehensive planning strategy. Real estate analyst Olabisi Odusanya noted that the economics of reclamation affects the location and nature of new developments.

Gbenga Adigun, CEO of Rebar Perfecta Ltd., highlighted the importance of understanding the seabed and managing the ground post-reclamation. Engr. Babatunji Adegoke warned that reclaimed land requires different assessments due to changing ground conditions.

The Lagos State Government suspended all land reclamation projects in September 2025, citing flooding, coastal erosion, and environmental degradation concerns. Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab reported that Lagos' landmass increased from 3,577 square kilometers to 4,050 square kilometers due to reclamation.
