UN Backs Resolution for Accurate Representation of Africa

On September 4, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly supported an Africa-led resolution advocating for the use of map projections that accurately reflect the size of continents, particularly Africa. This initiative was spearheaded by Togo and the African Union.

The resolution addresses the distortions of the Mercator projection, which exaggerates the size of land near the poles, making Africa appear smaller than its actual size of approximately 30 million square kilometers. The resolution promotes equal-area projections like Equal Earth, emphasizing education and perception without banning the Mercator projection or altering political boundaries.

The renewed focus on Africa's size coincides with its growing importance in the global economy, driven by a rapidly increasing population and a young demographic. Africa's role in supplying critical minerals for various industries is also highlighted, with countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo enhancing state control over its mining sector amid rising competition.

Additionally, the African Continental Free Trade Area aims to bolster intra-African trade and strengthen Africa's global trade position.
