Uber Exits Nigeria After 12 Years Amid Restructuring

Uber Technologies has declared the immediate cessation of its operations in Nigeria after twelve years, marking a significant exit from a key African market. The decision is part of a global restructuring plan and is not linked to any regulatory disputes, particularly those involving the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Senior officials emphasized that the move results from a review of Uber's evolving business priorities across Africa. The company is also cutting approximately 3,300 jobs globally, representing about 10% of its workforce, to streamline its organizational structure.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the rapid expansion over the past five years led to excessive complexity within the company. The restructuring aims to simplify team structures and focus investments on major opportunities.

Employees affected by the downsizing have been notified, except where local labor laws require formal procedures. The announcement has caused significant concern within Nigeria's technology and urban mobility sectors, impacting local drivers and riders.
