Wike Orders Demolition of Abuja Houses Blocking Waterways

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has directed the immediate removal of structures obstructing drainage channels in Abuja following severe flooding.

Nyesom Wike, who serves as Federal Capital Territory Minister, has mandated the removal of buildings and structures that obstruct waterways in flood-prone regions of Abuja, with Maitama district being particularly affected. Following his inspection of neighbourhoods impacted by torrential rainfall—which stranded residents and submerged vehicles throughout parts of the capital—Wike issued this directive.

The removal exercise will span from Tuesday until Saturday, with FCT Administration agencies responsible for executing the demolitions. At a press briefing held Tuesday at his office, Wike explained that property owners had either intentionally or unintentionally blocked channels set aside for water drainage per the Abuja Master Plan's original specifications.

The minister contended these obstructions played a significant role in the flooding that disrupted activities in affected neighbourhoods. He emphasised that demolitions will continue irrespective of owners' political influence or standing, making explicit that residences owned by senators and other prominent citizens may be demolished should they impede water flow.

Wike's stance represents enforcement of the city's planning guidelines, which establish specific corridors designated for water movement and drainage control. Abuja's recent flooding incident has renewed scrutiny regarding infrastructure standards compliance, particularly given how rapid expansion and construction activities have sometimes bypassed provisions outlined in the master plan.

The minister's remarks demonstrate administrative determination to place flood mitigation ahead of individual property claims. Across numerous flood-vulnerable zones throughout the FCT, this removal order will apply, though Maitama has been pinpointed as the primary target location.

FCT agencies have received instructions to initiate work at once, and the five-day window indicates accelerated execution of the removal initiative. Official statements have not disclosed which or how many structures face demolition.
