Supreme Court Rules on Osun State's Withheld LG Allocations Case

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has made a final decision in a case between the Federal Government and Osun State regarding withheld local government allocations. The court dismissed Osun State's suit, ruling that the state government lacked the necessary legal standing to invoke the court's original jurisdiction on behalf of its local government areas.

The court emphasized the autonomy of local government councils as legal entities capable of standing on their own. While the court upheld the preliminary objection raised by the Attorney General of the Federation, it urged the federal government to ensure the full implementation of fiscal autonomy for all 774 local government areas in the country.

The case was marked SC. CV 775/2025 and sought various reliefs, including the defense by the Attorney General of the Federation.
