Women’s Role Crucial in Combating Antibiotic Misuse

During a webinar focused on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), health experts underscored the significant role women play in combating irrational antibiotic use, which fuels AMR. Dr.

Mayssam Akroush, President of the Pan Arab Women Physician Association, stated that women are pivotal in leading changes in antibiotic use due to their roles as caregivers, educators, and decision-makers. Dr.

Soumya Swaminathan, former Chief Scientist at the World Health Organization, emphasized that addressing gender-based violence is essential for improving women's access to healthcare, as they are often at higher risk of intimate partner violence. This violence can lead to untreated infections and contribute to drug-resistant infections.

Additionally, Dr. Eesmita Charani from the University of Cape Town noted that healthcare expenditures are often decided by male family members, which can disadvantage women.

Dr. Deepshikha Bhateja highlighted societal norms surrounding women's roles and responsibilities, which can impact their health outcomes and access to care.
