Women’s Groups Push for Quick Passage of Reserve Seat Bills

Women’s groups in Nigeria are intensifying pressure on lawmakers for the swift passage of reserve seat bills aimed at increasing women's representation in governance. This advocacy campaign, which took place simultaneously across multiple states, was led by a network of women’s organizations, including the League of Women Voters Nigeria (NILOWV) and the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS).

Iren Awuna Ikyegh, speaking in Abuja, highlighted that the bill is not merely a gender issue but a national development priority that seeks to address the persistent underrepresentation of women in government. The campaign emphasizes the critical need for lawmakers to understand the urgency of public support for the bill, especially as the National Assembly resumes deliberations on constitutional amendments.

Awuna Ikyegh expressed concern that failure to secure the bill's passage by April would hinder its implementation before the next electoral cycle. The letter submitted to lawmakers urged support for the passage of the special seat bill, which is seen as vital for creating inclusive political opportunities and correcting long-standing gender imbalances in governance.
