Women’s Leadership Essential for Africa’s Development

At a women leader network meeting in Abuja, co-hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, participants underscored the critical role of women's leadership in Africa's development. Ms.

Ahunna Eziakonwa, UNDP Regional Director for Africa, stated that Africa's future depends on creating systems that enable women's participation in leadership roles. She emphasized that the question is not whether women can participate in development but whether Africa can create conditions for them to lead.

Eziakonwa also noted that 1,300 women from 41 African countries, including Nigeria, applied for a program aimed at strengthening women's political leadership. Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, Nigeria's Minister of Women Affairs, acknowledged progress in women's rights but pointed out significant gaps in representation across various sectors.

She mentioned ongoing government programs aimed at empowering women and attracting investments exceeding $540 million.
