JNPSNC Threatens Strike Over Fuel Prices and Wages

The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), Trade Union Side, has issued a red alert to the federal government, threatening a three-day warning strike beginning October 2 if urgent measures are not taken to lower petrol prices, introduce a wage award, and initiate negotiations for a new national minimum wage ahead of 2027. The ultimatum, which remains in effect until September 30, was communicated by Comrade Olowoyo Gbenga, the national secretary and general secretary of the Nigeria Civil Service Union.
The council stated that rising petrol prices, currently around N1,450 per litre in some areas and up to N2,500 in others, have severely impacted workers and their dependents. They demand a reduction to N500 per litre and an immediate wage award to alleviate economic hardship.
Additionally, they called for the establishment of a tripartite committee to negotiate the new minimum wage to prevent delays in implementation.
