Egypt Advances to World Cup Round of 16 After Penalties

Egypt's national football team, coached by Hossam Hassan, achieved a historic milestone by defeating Australia in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in their World Cup match, marking their first advancement to the Round of 16 in World Cup history. Emam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt in the 13th minute with a header from Karem Hafez's cross.

However, Australia equalized in the 55th minute when Moham Hani inadvertently scored an own goal from a free kick, becoming the second player in World Cup history to score two own goals in a single tournament. Despite dominating the latter stages of the match, neither team could find a winner, leading to extra time.

Goalkeeper Patrick Beach made crucial saves to keep Australia in the game, but Egypt converted all four of their penalty kicks, while Harri Soutter and Luca Herrington missed for Australia. Egypt will face the winner of the last 32 tie between Cape Verde and Argentina on June 7.
