FG Urges Nigerians to Plant Trees for Climate Action

On June 5, 2026, in observance of World Environment Day, Saleh Abubakar, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW), called on Nigerians to embrace mass tree planting as a strategy to combat desertification. Abubakar's message aligned with the environmental sustainability agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, focusing on tackling desertification, restoring degraded land, and strengthening climate resilience.

He noted that World Environment Day serves as a crucial platform for promoting global awareness and action for environmental protection, reflecting the 2026 theme of climate action. Abubakar urged Nigerians to actively participate in environmental stewardship and adopt sustainable practices within their communities.

He highlighted the agency's ongoing efforts to intensify tree planting and agroforestry programs aimed at building climate resilience in Nigeria's frontline states, which include Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara. The NAGGW plans to launch a nationwide campaign to plant 50 million date palm seedlings across these states to curb desertification, create green jobs, and enhance food security.
