Nigeria's Agriculture Sector Grows 4.39% in Q2 2026

On World Food Day 2026, the Federal Government of Nigeria announced a 4.39% growth in the agricultural sector for the second quarter of 2026, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics. Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, attributed this growth to ongoing reforms and investments aimed at strengthening food production and enhancing food security.
He noted that crop production expanded by 3.66% during this period, marking a significant recovery since 2021. The government is committed to achieving food security through policies designed to increase production, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve farmers' profitability.
Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the government is implementing a comprehensive agricultural transformation strategy that involves various stakeholders. The National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-Pocket have supported smallholder farmers in producing 2.5 million metric tonnes of staple foods.
Additionally, domestic wheat production has risen to approximately 420,000 metric tonnes, a 3.5-fold increase from previous levels. The government has also launched the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme to enhance farming efficiency.
