Umo Eno Launches ₦2.1bn Teacher Welfare Initiative

On October 6, during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration at Uyo Township Stadium, Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno declared a state of emergency in the education sector. He unveiled a welfare package exceeding ₦2.1 billion aimed at benefiting public school teachers and registered private schools.
Each of the 21,167 public school teachers will receive a ₦50,000 wardrobe allowance and a ₦10,000 transport allowance, totaling over ₦1.27 billion for public school teachers. Additionally, 1,776 registered private schools will receive a ₦500,000 support grant, amounting to ₦888 million.
Eno announced the recruitment of 2,000 new teachers, following a previous approval for 1,000. An Education Emergency Committee, led by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, will assess the education sector and recommend improvements.
Eno emphasized that teachers should receive rewards during their service and noted his administration's investment in education, including the construction of 38 model primary schools and the payment of WAEC fees.
