90 Nigerians Killed in South Africa Since 2022, FG Reports

The Nigerian government announced that 90 Nigerians have been killed in South Africa since 2022, as it facilitated the return of 83 citizens from the country. The repatriation was supported by private individuals who provided flight tickets.

Upon arrival in Nigeria, the returnees were welcomed by Haruna Ali-Gombe, the director of the African Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They were then handed over to relevant government agencies for documentation and family reunification.

Sola Enikanolaiye, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, called for urgent measures to address xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks during a virtual roundtable organized by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. He emphasized the need for stronger migration governance and deeper ties among African nations, describing the violence as a manifestation of Afrophobia, which reflects a post-colonial and post-apartheid context.
