NANS Urges Nigerian Government to Protect Students in SA

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) issued a statement on Wednesday expressing alarm over increasing xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. The Vice President of External Affairs for NANS highlighted a troubling pattern of hostility towards foreign nationals, particularly Nigerian students.

NANS called for urgent intervention from the Nigerian government to ensure the safety of its citizens amid escalating tensions. The association urged the government to take swift diplomatic action to engage with South African authorities to secure guarantees for the safety of Nigerian citizens, especially students.

They also appealed for immediate support for affected students, including provisions for safe shelter, emergency hotlines, and financial assistance. Furthermore, NANS recommended the development of a coordinated evacuation plan for Nigerian students who may need to return home.

Reports indicate that xenophobic protests have intensified in South Africa, with incidents of violence and harassment against migrants, including Nigerians, raising concerns within the diaspora community.
