Nigerians Must Self-Fund Return from South Africa

The Nigerian government, through spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa, stated that Nigerians wishing to return from South Africa amid rising xenophobic violence will need to self-fund their repatriation. This decision follows the killing of two Nigerians last month and the expression of interest from 130 Nigerians wanting to return home.

The government will facilitate the process but will not provide aircraft or funding for the flights. Individuals are expected to approach the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa to arrange their return.

The repatriation process is voluntary, and the speed will depend on the availability of funds. Many Nigerians are motivated to return due to safety concerns and fear of arrest by South African law enforcement.

The government aims to assist in the movement back to Nigeria while addressing the rising tensions in South Africa.
