Nigeria Police Warn Against Reprisal Attacks on South Africans

The Nigeria Police Force issued a warning against potential reprisal attacks on South African nationals and businesses in Nigeria, following reports of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa. This warning comes amid growing public concern and fear of retaliatory actions within Nigeria.

The police stated that a joint intelligence board meeting was held on May 18, 2026, to assess the security implications and determine necessary response measures. DCP Anthoni Placid assured Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm and noted that the federal government is actively engaging relevant authorities and stakeholders to resolve the situation peacefully.

The police emphasized that citizens should not resort to self-help or violence, as such actions could threaten public peace and national security. They urged the public to refrain from spreading unverifiable and inflammatory information, particularly on social media, which could heighten tensions.
