Nigeria Warns Citizens Ahead of South Africa Protests

The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg has alerted citizens about a planned nationwide anti-foreign protest scheduled for May 4, 2026. The advisory, issued by Consul General Ninikanwa Okei Uch, warns that the protests are organized by a group advocating for the removal of foreign nationals, alleging that they benefit from South African resources.

The protests are expected to disrupt major cities, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban, with significant gatherings anticipated at locations like Mari Fitzgerald Square in Newtown. Nigerians are strongly advised to avoid confrontations and monitor local media for updates.

Business owners are encouraged to consider closing their establishments during the protests due to potential risks. The advisory comes amid rising xenophobic tensions, with at least 130 Nigerians previously evacuated following incidents linked to protests.

The Nigerian government, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu and President Bola Tinubu, prioritizes the safety of Nigerians abroad and is in contact with South African authorities to ensure protection.
