Deyemi Okanlawon, a Nigerian actor and filmmaker, commented on Nigeria's mediocrity problem, suggesting that to succeed in the country, individuals often need to tone down their intellect. His remarks were made during a resurfaced clip from a past episode of the podcast "Dear If." Okanlawon explained that early in his career, he attempted to take on serious roles that required intellectual depth, but this did not generate significant buzz.

He noted a shift in his career when he embraced roles that aligned with the prevailing mediocrity in the industry, which ultimately led to his success as one of Nollywood's highest-grossing actors in 2020 and 2021. Okanlawon holds a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Lagos and has been acting full-time since 2013.

His comments came amid ongoing discussions triggered by rapper Ycee, who criticized the Nigerian society for rewarding viral, low-effort content over intellectual achievements.
