Zuckerberg to Testify in Social Media Addiction Trial

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, is scheduled to testify in a significant trial in Los Angeles concerning social media addiction, particularly related to Instagram. The trial, which began on a Wednesday, addresses accusations that Instagram deliberately hooks young users, contributing to mental health issues.

This case is notable as it is the first of its kind, with thousands of lawsuits filed by American families against social media platforms. The jury, consisting of 12 members, will hear testimonies until late March to determine if Meta's Instagram and Google's YouTube are responsible for mental health problems experienced by users like 20-year-old Kalei G.

M., who has been using social media since childhood. The trial aims to establish legal standards regarding social media's role in exacerbating issues such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders among youth.

Adam Mosseri, Instagram's chief, previously testified, rejecting the notion of social media addiction, while psychiatrist Anna Lembke described social media as a gateway drug for young people.
