Islamic Cleric Denies Coup Charges, Claims Prayer Funds

Sheikh Bukar Kashim Goni, an Islamic cleric, is currently on trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja for allegedly attempting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu's government. The prosecution has presented evidence, including financial records, indicating that ₦10 million was transferred to Goni's bank account in October 2024.

Goni maintains that the funds were intended solely for spiritual services and charitable activities, not for financing a coup d'état. He is co-defending alongside several high-profile individuals, including retired Major General Moham Ibrahim Gana and retired Naval Captain Erasmu Ochegobia.

During the court proceedings, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik dismissed claims that the funds were meant for subversive activities. Goni stated that his relationship with military personnel, particularly Colonel Moham Ma Aji, was purely religious, aimed at providing spiritual support.

The trial continues as the court examines digital evidence and testimonies linking the defendants to the alleged conspiracy.
