Senate Leader Proposes Six-Year Single Term for Leaders

Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate leader, disclosed plans to sponsor a bill proposing a six-year single term for the presidency and governors, aimed for introduction in the 11th Senate. This initiative is among the first bills he intends to introduce when the Senate reconvenes.

Bamidele argues that the current two-term arrangement often forces officeholders to dedicate significant portions of their first term to political calculations for re-election. He believes that a single six-year term would eliminate distractions associated with seeking a second term, allowing leaders to concentrate on governance.

Bamidele acknowledged that while the proposal may not enjoy universal support, it is intended to evolve in response to changing public needs. The formal introduction of the bill will require a constitutional amendment and must pass through the National Assembly.
