Senate to Propose Six-Year Term for President, Governors

Opeyemi Bamidele, a member of the 11th Senate, announced during a plenary session that the Senate will consider a proposal for a single six-year term for the President and state governors after the 2027 elections. Bamidele explained that the aim of this proposal is to improve governance by allowing elected leaders to focus fully on their responsibilities without the distraction of re-election campaigns.

He emphasized that a six-year single tenure would enable officeholders to dedicate their energy to governance without worrying about the re-election process, which often consumes significant time and resources. Bamidele expressed optimism about the bill's potential, stating that it would allow leaders to put their best efforts into their tenures.

He acknowledged that while this proposal may not receive unanimous support, it is essential for the growth of the law and governance in Nigeria.
