14.3 Million Nigerians Affected by Drug Abuse Crisis

The Sardauna Foundation has raised an alarm regarding drug abuse in Nigeria, stating that approximately 14.3 million Nigerians are involved in drug use, with a prevalence rate of 14.4 percent according to data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. This alarming trend particularly affects the youth, posing serious risks to national development, public health, and security.

The foundation's statement, issued on March 30, 2026, followed a monthly virtual mentorship program that discussed the socio-economic implications of drug substance abuse. Dr.

Muhammad Kasim from the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital highlighted that the increasing availability of synthetic drugs has led to a rise in addiction and mental health disorders, putting pressure on the healthcare system. The foundation expressed particular concern for Northern Nigeria, where high poverty rates, unemployment, and low school enrollment contribute to increased vulnerability among youth to substance abuse.
