Experts Urge National Emergency for Youth Drug Crisis

Buba Marwa, the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), along with various stakeholders, has urged the declaration of a national emergency to tackle the escalating drug abuse crisis among Nigerian youth. This call was made during the third edition of the "Fly Above High" conference held in Abuja.

Experts highlighted the severe implications of substance abuse on individual and national development, stressing its impact on mental health, family dynamics, societal progress, economic stability, and national security. Adekunl Adesina from the Recovery Advocacy Network emphasized the importance of early intervention, including structured drug education for children aged eight to ten and increased investment in counseling services.

The conference also called for tighter regulations on prescription drugs like codeine and tramadol, advocating for a shift in public perception to treat substance dependence as a medical condition rather than a moral failing. Additionally, the need for a multi-sector approach involving community actors, including faith-based organizations and media, was underscored to effectively address the crisis.
