Nigerian Legislature Extends 2025 Budget Deadline to 2026

On September 30, 2026, the Senate and House of Representatives in Nigeria approved an extension of the implementation deadline for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act, moving it from September 30 to December 31, 2026. This decision was made during a session where Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) sponsored a bill to amend the 2025 Appropriation Act, citing the need for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to complete ongoing projects and effectively utilize appropriated funds.

The House of Representatives, led by House Leader Julius Ihonvbere, also approved this extension, marking the fourth time the deadline has been extended. Originally set to expire on December 31, 2025, the implementation period has now been extended for another full year.

This extension follows previous adjustments made to the budget timeline to facilitate the completion of capital projects and meet outstanding obligations, despite the government's commitment to avoid overlapping budgets as stated by President Bola Tinubu.
