Ex-INEC Commissioner Igini Critiques 2026 Electoral Act

Igho Igini, a former commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has labeled the 2026 Electoral Act as the worst in Nigeria's history, expressing concerns about its implications for the country's democracy. Speaking during the second annual lecture of the National Institute for Security Studies Alumni Association in Abuja, Igini warned that if urgent steps are not taken to address the issues surrounding the Act, Nigerians may be denied the opportunity to freely determine their leaders in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

He stressed the necessity for immediate reforms to safeguard the credibility of the electoral process, which he believes is fundamental to Nigeria's democratic stability and overall development. Igini identified three key institutions essential for effective electoral management: the electoral body, the judiciary, and security agencies, emphasizing the importance of their independent coordination to ensure transparent and fair elections.

He cautioned that failure to rectify the flaws in the proposed legislation could undermine public trust and weaken democratic institutions.
