INEC Officials Warn of Flaws in Electoral Act 2026

During a roundtable discussion organized by Yiaga Africa in Abuja, former officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) expressed serious concerns regarding the Electoral Act 2026. They highlighted potential conflicts in the provisions related to electronic transmission of results, warning that these flaws could undermine electoral integrity if not urgently addressed.

Key speakers included Festus Okoye, former National Commissioner; Mike Igini, former Resident Electoral Commissioner; and Engr. Chidi Nwafor, former ICT Director.

They criticized the recent amendments signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, which necessitate a review of the electoral timetable and the repeal of the 2022 act. The officials argued for the importance of real-time result transmission from polling units to INEC's central server to curb manipulation and strengthen credibility.

They also cautioned lawmakers against embedding specific technologies in the statute, advocating for flexibility to adapt to technological advancements. The discussion underscored the need for a harmonized approach to eliminate ambiguities and safeguard future elections.
