Education Minister Awards Top UTME Scorers in Abuja

Education Minister Awards Top UTME Scorers in Abuja

On October 22, 2026, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, and Professor Segun Aina, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), presented awards and certificates to top scorers of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) at a ceremony in Abuja. Alausa urged the awardees to leverage their academic knowledge for practical solutions through innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.

He highlighted that youth development is a priority for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, noting that about 70 percent of Nigeria’s population is under 30. Alausa revealed that only 108 out of approximately 39,000 UTME candidates under 16 met the admission requirements, with more than two million candidates sitting for the examination.

Candidates needed to score at least 80 percent in the UTME, post-UTME, and O’Level examinations, demonstrating readiness for university life. Alausa emphasized that high examination scores alone do not guarantee readiness for university education.
