FIFA to Decide on Nigeria's Protest Over DR Congo Players

FIFA is expected to deliver a verdict on Nigeria's protest concerning the eligibility of six players from the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged a formal complaint against the Democratic Republic of Congo Football Association, alleging that these players were ineligible during last year's African playoff, which saw Nigeria eliminated after a penalty shootout loss to Morocco.

NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi emphasized that Nigeria followed due process in submitting legal documents and arguments, which hinge on FIFA's regulations regarding player nationality switches. Reports suggest that the Congolese FA may have misrepresented player statuses, particularly given the domestic prohibition on dual citizenship in DR Congo.

The matter has garnered attention, involving CAF General Secretary V. Ron Mosengo Omba and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, with Nigeria prepared to escalate the issue to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if necessary.

If Nigeria's protest succeeds, the Super Eagles could be reinstated into the intercontinental playoff against the winner of the Jamaica vs. New Caledonia match for a final ticket to the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

NFF Chairman Shehu Dikko acknowledged that the situation may not conclude with Monday's decision.
