ADC Emerges Leading Opposition in Senate Amid Defections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has positioned itself as the leading opposition party in the Nigerian Senate following a series of defections from the People's Democratic Party (PDP). As of the latest developments, the ADC now holds nine Senate seats, while the PDP's representation has decreased to six seats.

The PDP had 36 senators at the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly on June 10, 2023. The current Senate composition includes the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 87 senators, ADC with 9, PDP with 6, and other smaller parties.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to conduct fresh elections to fill three vacant Senate seats in Nasarawa North, Enugu North, and Rivers South East. The defections have been attributed to internal disagreements within the parties, with several lawmakers switching to the ADC from the PDP and other parties.

Notably, the ADC's growth comes amidst a backdrop of political maneuvering as various members seek to align with parties that reflect their leadership aspirations.
