Akpabio Declares ADC "Dead" Amid Mass Defections

On Tuesday, Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, addressed the recent mass defections from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a plenary session. He remarked that the ADC is effectively "dead" following a significant number of lawmakers moving to other parties, such as the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Labour Party.

Akpabio's comments came shortly after the formal announcement of defections, which included Victor Umeh joining the NDC. He cited ongoing internal crises and unresolved litigations within the ADC as reasons for the resignations.

Akpabio suggested that the Senate should coordinate the handling of defections to avoid the frequent individual announcements that have become a daily ritual. Notably, 16 members of the House of Representatives defected from the ADC to the NDC, including lawmakers like Yusuf Datti and Uchenna Okonkwo.

Enyinnaya Abaribe also noted the trend of political realignment in the National Assembly, indicating a shift in party affiliations among lawmakers.
