Atiku Abubakar Critiques Tinubu's Economic Policies

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has condemned President Bola Tinubu's economic policies, labeling them a failure amid rising living costs in Nigeria. In a statement from Phrank Shaibu, the Director of Strategic Communications for the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku emphasized that Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities.

He referenced a June 2026 report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which acknowledged improvements in Nigeria's macroeconomic outcomes but also noted that 63 percent of Nigerians live below the national poverty line, with 27 million facing food insecurity. Atiku criticized the government's inability to translate economic figures into tangible benefits for citizens, stating that promises of future gains have not materialized after over three years.

He pointed out that recent fuel price increases have exacerbated financial pressures, with petrol prices reaching N1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, and diesel exceeding N2,000 per litre.
