Kwara's 2027 Governorship Race Intensifies with Key Appointments

The contest for the Ilorin Government House in February 2027 is heating up, with the primary focus on two leading candidates: Engineer Salihu Yakubu Danladi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Engineer Bolakale Kawu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced 11 political parties participating in the election, but only Associate Professor Yinka Ajia of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has gained notable visibility.

Recently, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq appointed Alhaji Mashood Mustapha, a former cabinet member and House of Representatives member, as the leader of the state's contingent for the 2027 Muslim pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Mustapha, previously the PDP candidate for the Kwara Central senatorial district, was replaced by Senator Saliu Mustapha, who defected from APC to PDP.

Despite this, Mustapha's new role indicates his allegiance to Governor Abdulrazaq and the APC, raising questions about the impact of his support on the upcoming elections.
