Peter Obi Advocates for Free Election Campaigns in Nigeria

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), addressed the need for unhindered access to voters as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. Speaking at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference in Enugu, he asserted that every part of Nigeria should be conducive for election campaigns.

Obi criticized state governors for showing intolerance by restricting the movements of political opponents. He cited his own experience as the former governor of Anambra State, where he allowed opposition campaigns, including providing his convoy to Babatunde Fashola for a campaign in support of Chris Ngige.

Obi stressed that the 2027 campaigns should focus on issues rather than personal attacks, urging editors to hold candidates accountable for their qualifications and statements. He also mentioned that despite his differences with President Bola Tinubu, he has never resorted to personal attacks against him, emphasizing respect for the office of the presidency.
